The ‘Pinoy Boyband Superstar’ Journey of the Grand Finalists

December 08, 2016

Last Saturday night, the Top 8 contestants were divided into four pairs and faced the Sudden Death Challenge. After each group’s performance, a superstar judge had to comment on their performance and that same judge had to choose one who will be saved and become a grand finalist, and who will be up for elimination.

The first group composed of Joao and Tristan performed Justin Bieber’s hit single “What Do You Mean”. After their performance, Sandara Park decided to save Joao over Tristan. The second pair was James and Russell and they performed Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing”. Yeng Constantino commented that one of them has the potential to be the front man of the boyband they are forming and she chose Russell over James. The third group composed of Ford and Niel performed Ne-Yo’s “So Sick”. Aga Muhlach said that both of them impressed him but in the end, he chose Niel over Ford to advance to the grand finals. The fourth pair was Tony and Mark and they performed Rivermaya’s song “You’ll Be Safe Here”. Vice Ganda commented on their performance and decided to save Mark over Tony.

Joao, Russell, Niel and Mark became the first four grand finalists while Tristan, James, Ford and Tony were the four performers up for elimination and they performed their survival songs in the live elimination last Sunday night.

Tristan sang Stevie Wonder’s "Knocks Me Off My Feet", Tony serenaded the audience with Bugoy Drilon’s “Pagka’t Mahal Kita", James had his own rendition of Maroon 5’s “Sunday Morning” while Ford performed Sam Smith’s “I’m Not The Only One”. Meanwhile, the four grand finalists performed “Ang Kulit”, the theme song of “The Super Parental Guardians”, with superstar judge Vice Ganda.

The super fans voted and they saved Ford and Tony from the elimination. After the results were announced, the superstar judges had to choose between the two remaining contestants, James and Tristan. Yeng Constantino and Vice Ganda voted for Tristan while Aga Muhlach and Sandara Park voted for James. Since it was a tie, the decision will go back to the text and online votes of the super fans. Tristan who got a higher vote was saved while James became the fifth and last finalist to be eliminated from the competition.
